THE BRISTOL & DISTRICT BLITZ WAR MEMORIAL

A register of those who lost their lives due to enemy action in Bristol and surrounding districts, 1940-1944

Compiled by John Penny

As no comprehensive War Memorial exists to commemorate those who lost their lives during German air attacks on the Bristol area it is hoped that this tribute will go some way towards redressing the situation. As well as providing much more information about each victim than would normally be possible, it is hoped that this on line version can be visited by those who would otherwise be unable to make the journey to Bristol's Greenbank Cemetery where a number of victims were buried in mass graves and where a memorial arch and plaque dedicated to the civilians who lost their lives is to be found. Other important local memorials are to be found in Filton House (British Aircraft Corporation) and Filton Church as well as St.Mary's Churchyard at Yate, while details of all German aircrew killed in operations against the area are to be found in the section on Luftwaffe Operations elsewhere on the Fishponds Local History website.

The following register is NOT arranged in alphabetical order, but is laid out as a chronology of the raids. In addition the individual fatalities suffered during each attack are grouped by area and street, thereby keeping families and neighbours together and presenting an overall picture of the localities most seriously affected. Although the register has been compiled from a number of "official" sources and is the most accurate and comprehensive available, any additional information and corrections would be most welcome.

Although many of Bristol's shattered buildings were subsequently repaired, other sites were completely cleared and various incongruous structures and inappropriate road systems constructed during the 1960's and 70's, a constant reminder of the destruction caused by the Luftwaffe. Far more emotive, however, is the eerie stillness of the long abandoned Purdown anti-aircraft gun site and the sombre rows of British and German war graves in Greenbank cemetery, which for generations to come will bear silent witness to Bristol's suffering during World War Two and hopefully remind us of the price that was paid for the personal freedom which we all now take so much for granted.
